THE DELICIOUS WEBSITE OF CHILLY WONTON WILLY
This story is the first in a series of stories about Chilly Wonton Willy. The series is entitled The Super Delicious Adventures of Chilly Wonton Willy. The stories are richly illustrated and written in rhyming verse. Wonton Willy is an animated bowl of wonton soup. In the story we meet some of Willy’s friends; Egg Drop Sue, Cheddar Cheese, Walt de Walrus, Paula Penguin and Silver Spoon.
In this first story, Wonton Willy becomes known as “Chilly” Wonton Willy because he discovers that he has lost his heat. This is terrible because no one likes cold wonton soup, and he loses his job at Joe’s Chinese Buffet. Chilly is very sad, but his friends rally around him, beginning with his BFF, Silver Spoon.
They decide to go on an adventure to find Chilly’s heat. They start out for Mexico because it is hot there and maybe that’s where they will find his heat. But without a compass, they keep getting lost. Paula Penguin suggests they find a map. Cheddar tells them his grandfather has a map. So, they travel to Wisconsin, where Cheddar’s family lives. Grandma Cheddar throws a huge party at her house. Uncle Pumpernickel gives them a map he had borrowed from Grandpa Cheddar.
They start out again, and this time they are successful in making their way to Mexico. Once there, they learn about a soup called Gazpacho, that is served cold. Chilly suddenly realizes why he got cold. “Chef” Pierre, who was in charge while Joe was on vacation, turned off the stove. When they return to Soupville, Chilly gets his job back. Everyone is happy and laughing and having fun again.
Chilly Wonton Willy is a Wonton Soup. His name is fun to say. Wonton Soup is a Chinese creation. It is essentially a chicken stock with meat filled dumplings. Pasta dough is shaped into a small square and a spoon of seasoned meat and/or fish is placed in the center. Then it’s folded up and sealed so it cooks without falling apart. After the wontons are cooked, they get covered with warm chicken soup and sometimes vegetables. Wonton dumplings, like most food in China, are made differently in different areas of the country. Have you ever had Wonton Soup?
Egg Drop Sue’s name is fun because she’s an Egg Drop Soup. Egg drop soup is also sometimes called Egg Flower Soup. It is also usually made with chicken broth. When it is just about done, the chef slowly pours a stream of whipped eggs into the soup and stirs it gently. This creates long ribbons of egg in the soup that look like silky soft noodles.
